AI-focused hedge funds attract record capital

Questions remain over fundamentals despite investor enthusiasm.

AI-focused hedge fund managers are achieving some of the fastest asset growth in the industry's history, as investors seek exposure to one of the most powerful themes shaping global markets.

Managers focused on AI-related investments have attracted capital at an unprecedented pace, reflecting growing investor conviction that AI will create long-term opportunities across tech, infrastructure, and automation, according to analysis by WithIntelligence.

The surge highlights a broader shift in hedge fund allocations. Rather than relying solely on traditional equity strategies, investors are increasingly backing specialist managers with expertise in identifying companies positioned to benefit from the expansion of AI.

Two of the leading AI-focused hedge fund firms, Value Aligned Research Advisors (VARA) and Situational Awareness, now manage approximately $40 billion between them.

VARA, which launched its hedge fund strategy in 2025, has grown to $15 billion in assets, supported by substantial gains since launch, while its long-only strategy has also expanded rapidly.

In comparison, San Francisco-based Situational Awareness, which launched its hedge fund in late 2024, now manages approximately $20 billion after delivering similarly strong returns.

Beyond investment returns, the rise of AI is also changing the way investors approach corporate analysis and shareholder engagement. Activist investors are increasingly using AI tools to analyze company disclosures, identify underperformance, and hone campaigns.

However, the rapid growth of AI-focused strategies has also raised questions over whether investor enthusiasm may be running ahead of fundamentals.

As capital concentrates around a relatively small group of companies benefiting from the AI theme, managers will need to prove that their performance is driven by genuine investment skill rather than broader market momentum.

For investors, the next phase will be determining which managers have developed a sustainable advantage in identifying AI opportunities, and which are simply benefiting from one of the market's most crowded themes.
